Describes the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in plant community establishment at Samphire Hoe, Kent, United Kingdom. Creation of a land platform comprising the sub-seabed material excavated during the construction of the Channel tunnel between France and the United Kingdom; Role of the mycorrhizal symbiosis in dry, low nutrient soils; Levels of colonisation of indigenous plants; Findings that field seedlings which were inoculated with the indigenous AMF, had the same tiller production as commercially-produced plants; Success of a phyto-microbial approach to the revegetation of nutrient-poor soils.
