Abstract

The article focuses on the problem of numismatics regarding the correct quantity of $2½ proof coins produced in 1910. Gold coin specialist Walter Breen explained the large mintage to be typographical error on the records at the U.S. Mint. The author insists that the records were correct and attributes the mystery to the behavior of collectors who tend to buy huge amount of coins that they perceive to sparse in the future. It adds that there is no idea on what happened to the excess coins.
