Abstract

This paper is offered as a commentary on the Australian Psychological Society's position paper 'Psychological Aspects of Gambling Behaviour'. Comment is made on the extent to which the paper meets its stated objectives and the ways in which it contributes significantly to understanding of the theoretical bases of problem gambling behaviour and treatment strategies. It is argued, however, that the position paper is lacking where it omits reference to motivational theory and derivative treatments. Finally, comment is also offered regarding discussion of the disease model. This discourse is based on my clinical experience as a psychologist and problem gambling counsellor working within the Victorian BreakEven network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
