Abstract

This article charts an aspect of contemporary necro-ontology and necro-economics as a theory and practice. It begins with a discussion of governmentality and subsequently engages Blaney and Inyatullah's recent intervention in International Political Economy. I am particularly interested in their discussion of Hegel. By drawing on the idea of “direct theory” I bring into conversation social movement theorizing with academic theory to trace the chains of savagery that weave the fabric of Hegel's necro-ontology and its continuities in the European Union's Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs), and much trade policy more generally. The second section offers an exploration of the European Commission's Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) from the vantage point of governmentality. I contend that governmentality is at work in two interrelated senses. On the one hand, there is an attempt to constitute individualist rationalist maximizers. On the other, there is an attempt to constitute African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states as neoliberal market subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
