Abstract

The article focuses on Coiner Colonel Archibald Loudon Snowden who is the forefront of investigation of the directed striking of coins or the use of old dies at the Philadelphia Mint. It states that the U.S. Treasury sent its first comptroller to investigate the activities at the coining department in December 1871. It says that the employees at the coining department have claimed that Snowden has ordered making three punches who did not correspond to the size of coinage made at the mint.
