Abstract

An essay is presented on the role of African American disc jockey Vernon Lloyd Winslow, also known as Dr. Daddy-O, in racially integrating radio in New Orleans, Louisiana between 1948 and 1950. It comments on the introduction of black culture into radio broadcasting. The author considers Winslow's time at the radio station WJMR, where he coached white disc jockey Duke Thiele to speak with a black dialect, and his work with the Fitzgerald Advertising Agency on the radio station WWEZ.
