Abstract
- Examines John Wilson Bengough's caricatures, verses and editorial commentaries in 'Grip,' a weekly publication of satire and social and political commentary launched on May 24, 1873 in Canada which ran for nearly 21 years. Bengough's reliance on allegories of gender and sexuality to convey his idea of Canadian nationalism and the relationship between nation and the state to his readers.
