Abstract
- The rapid growth of urban centres around the world is intimately bound up with global migration, which increases the multicultural diversity of these centres. The urban landscape changes to reflect the cultural interests of the minorities created by this migration. This paper analyses this process through an analysis of two types of migrants in London: the well-established Bangladeshi Muslim minority, and those who have recently arrived from Poland. The focus will be on the role played by religious leaders and activists in providing a physical and spiritual home in a Western secular city and their engagement with outsiders, especially local politicians and council officers.
