Abstract
- An essay is presented on slavery, free blacks, and citizenship rights in the U.S., focusing on American constitutional law during the nation's Civil War, as well as analyses of the life and liberty protections contained in the U.S. Constitution. The reported exclusion of free blacks from the American polity prior to the adoption of the Reconstruction Amendments to the nation's Constitution is addressed in relation to citizenship. Naturalization and various forms of membership are examined.
