An article is presented on the history and human geography of transatlantic telegraph networks in Heart's Content, Newfoundland and Labrador. The author offers information on social factors influencing the lives of the operators of the Heart's Content telegraph station as well as the divide which separated the operators of these remote telegraph stations from the globalizing effects of early telecommunications technology. The history of the economy of Heart's Content is described and the effect of the introduction of telegraphy on the literacy of rural Canadians is examined.
