Abstract

The article provides a national view on graduate education in economics in the U.S. The number of universities offering graduate work in U.S. and Canada fluctuates. A large number of students opt for big colleges to small institutions for bachelor degrees. A small number stays in same institution for doctorate programs, while many move to another institution. The graduate institutions are selected by students on the basis of geographical proximity to home, cost of education and evening school. Majority of the institutions in the U.S. lack specialization and offer a standardized program with broad coverage of many fields. Economic education should make students familiar with the current developments in the field.
