Abstract
- This paper presents implications of connecting large remote generation sources to an existing grid. This implication is explored in terms of small signal stability of the system when this remote generation is connected through HVDC and HVAC links. Critical electromechanical modes of the system with HVDC and HVAC interconnection scenarios are determined and analysed. The participation factor of the critical mode is observed to examine the impact of the new generation on the damping performance of the system. Properly tuned controllers are designed using phase compensation method to improve damping performance of the grid in presence of remote generation. Their performances are also examined and compared for both HVAC and HVDC interconnections with different loading conditions of the system. Simulations are carried out on the simplified SE Australian power system using the Mudpack software and MATLAB. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
