Abstract
- The article explores the mechanisms and ways of knowing adopted by a teacher in South African for understanding what it means to be a teacher in a rural school. Particular focus is given to the daily lived experiences of a teacher named Hilton and the social realities of working in the context of rural education. It shows how the teacher chooses to negotiate the discourses dominating rural schooling and its culture, learners, teachers and communities.
