The article discusses the decision making process which is used by medical professionals in the surgical treatment of chronic low back pain. A discussion of research which investigated the side effects of lumbar spinal fusion and the performance of prognostic tests used to select patients with low back pain who could be eligible for lumbar spinal fusion is presented.
