Abstract
- The article critiques the domination of African labor migration historiography by South African models through a discussion of labor migration patterns and work culture in German colonial Tanzania. The author argues that the focus on migration from the kraal, or southern African agricultural settlements, to European plantations within southern African historiography does not provide an adequate way to understand colonial Tanzanian labor migration. More specifically, the author notes differences between Tanzanian and southern African migration in the areas of capital penetration, peasant involvement in local economies, women's labor migration, and white settlers' ability to implement colonial agricultural policy.
