Abstract

A case study is presented concerning the role and function of the Devon, England, militia during the Spanish Armada in summer 1588. The article discusses British military strategy to repel Spanish invasions, particularly the mutual aid strategy devised by the British Privy Council. It also discusses the roles of the late Earl of Leicester Robert Dudley and the late London, England, army commander Henry Carey during the invasion crisis.
