The author discusses the debate over standards and guidelines for online social media listening methods in market research. She notes the challenges in developing systems for sentiment analysis of brand opinions with high validity results. She argues that research standards are necessary to ensure disclosure of opinion data sources, reduce the negative impacts of computer spam, and provide greater vendor-client transparency.
