Abstract

The article discusses the importance of newborn screening which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013. According to estimates, roughly 4 million infants born each year in the U.S. undergo newborn screening for the early identification of genetic disorders. Research done on Phenylketonuria (PKU) is cited as the beginning of the recognition of the importance of newborn screening.
