Abstract

The article focuses on key provisions of the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Approved by the U.S. Congress in 2000, AGOA was meant to assist the region's economies through improved economic relations with the U.S. Under the legislation, the U.S. President has the authority to designate countries that will be eligible to receive duty-free treatment from the U.S. based on certain criteria. AGOA has been amended by the U.S. Congress five times, with 2012 as the most recent.
