Abstract

The article discusses the increasing prevalence of online, free higher education options in response to rising costs of U.S. higher education. It comments on the inception of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and their relationship with traditional educational methods, as well as comments on technological advances in education that enable globally accessible online classes. It notes the benefits provided by MOOCs to the developing world, the effort to eliminate barriers to access to high-quality education, and issues of authentication.
