Abstract

The article discusses attempts to establish a Jewish colony in the Portuguese colony of Angola in the early twentieth century. It examines the leadership of Anglo-Jewish author Israel Zangwill and his organization the international Jewish Territorial Organization, known as the ITO. The author considers the views of the British Foreign Office and the relationship between ITOism and Zionism. Individuals discussed include explorer and scientist John Walter Gregory, Russian jurist Jacob Teitel, and British minister to Portugal Sir Arthur Hardinge.
