Abstract

The article discusses coconuts and the sustainability of the fruit's global supply chain as of December 2012, focusing on an analysis of the use of coconuts in products such as coconut water beverages and skin oils. It states that there is a strain in the local supply chains in Brazil, Kenya, and Indonesia where a majority of the world's coconuts are harvested. Farmers are reportedly not replanting additional coconut crops since the money they are paid for their crops does not justify an increase in production. Fair-trade programs are also mentioned.
