Abstract

Cultural differences do not, according to this author, explain the superior productivity of Japanese workers. They are not absent significantly less, are not less likely to quit, and do not work harder than workers from other countries. What really makes a difference is the investment of Japanese companies in engineering and equipment support, their policies on recruitment, pay, and promotion, and their ownership structure.
