Abstract: The article presents information on the conformational state of mechanosensitive channels (MscS) in solution identified by pulsed electron-electron double resonance (PELDOR) spectroscopy. MscS gating behaves as safety valves to protect bacterial cells against hypo-osmotic shock by gating in response to intracellular pressure.
