Abstract
- The article looks at the competition among foreign banks in entering the Mexican banking sector and their effects on the Mexican banking system from 1997 to 2007. The liberalization of bank entry by the Mexican government encouraged foreign banks to purchase major banks in Mexico since 1997, causing foreign market share growth from 16 to 76 percent in December 2002. Various foreign banks that have been conducting business in Mexico include Banco Santander, Scotiabank Inverlat and Bital.
