Abstract

The article examines how much money U.S. President Barack Obama and his political rival, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, are spending on campaign advertisements in 2012. Television executives anticipate that October 2012 will set records for campaign spending, with local television stations charging up to 1000 dollars per second for political advertisements; the article examines whether this spending will actually help the candidates win voters. Topics include how Romney and Obama are splitting their time between debate preparation and presidential campaigning, predictions that advertising saturation will be detrimental to voters' enthusiasm, and how large political action committees (PACs) are raising hundreds of millions of dollars for the candidates.
