Abstract

Examines the position in modern English of the phrase 'aren't I' as compared with that of its equivalents, 'am I not,' 'amn't I' and a(')n't I.' Observation that many manuals still keep silent about the existence of the pattern 'aren't I'; Certain scholars' belief that 'aren't I' is vulgar; Argument that in colloquial speech 'am I not' or 'am not I' often becomes 'ain't I' or 'aren't I.'
