Abstract

The article presents a profile of the city of Beijing, China, focusing on its function as the capital of the country as well as its status as a global city. The article provides a brief history of Beijing's growth as an industrial city under the leadership of Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong, examines the political and cultural elements of the city, and discusses the country's transition from a planned to a market economy under Chinese politician Deng Xiaoping. It also discusses urban density and pollution within the city, comments on the village origins of Beijing, and analyzes the importance of Beijing in comparison to the city of Shanghai, China.
