Abstract

The article discusses the role of poliovirus type 1 in the etiology of Severe Acute respiratory Syndrome (SARS). SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) is necessary and sufficient for the causation of SARS in humans. Studies have indicated the existence of oral polio vaccine (OPV)-like poliovirus 1 in adult cases of SARS, along with SARS-CoV. However, the exact relationship between OPV-like poliovirus 1 and SARS/SARS-CoV remains unknown.
