Abstract

The article discusses 1967 photographs by Ronald Traeger of model Leslie Hornby, better known as Twiggy, riding an English Raleigh Wisp moped through Battersea Park in South London, England. It comments on gendered aspects of riding motorized vehicles. The author reflects on how Twiggy embodied the popular culture of "swinging" London in the 1960s and examines the English Mod subculture. She also considers the moped industry, examining Japanese automaker Honda and English bicycle company Raleigh's manufacturing of mopeds.
