Abstract

The article looks at Pakistan's domestic political structure and instability as well as key political players. It discusses the election of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in 2008 and the threat to the majority status of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and its government in 2010 and 2011. It also reports on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's conviction for contempt of court, the rise of former cricket hero Imran Khan and his party, and the resurgence of conservative Islamist forces.
