Reports on a warm event during spring 1997 to spring 1999 in the South China Sea. The intensity and duration of the record event; Association with the severe flood over the Yangtze River valley; Assessment of the evolution process with several data sets, such as sea surface temperature, height and wind stress, as well as subsurface temperature; How the warm event's onset almost teleconnects with El Niño; Effect on the summer and winter monsoons in 1997; Presence of westerly anomalies in the South China Sea; How southerly anomalies affect thermocline adjustment and the downwelling pattern; End of the warm event in May 1999.
