Abstract

In general, pain sensitivity is greater in women than men. Pressure pain threshold at fibromyalgia tender points is significantly lower in women, even in samples where men report more severe fibromyalgia symptoms. Men seeking fibromyalgia treatment will typically have more severe symptoms and disability than female treatment seekers. Both men and women generally respond similarly to typical fibromyalgia drug and non-drug treatments. Ethnicity affects pain tolerance and acceptance of healthcare recommendations.
