Abstract

A broad range of data concerning political systems is embedded in the archaeological record. The present survey is general in nature but suggests that demographic, cultural, societal, geographical and iconographic approaches, especially when employed in combination, will further an understanding of the political organization of text‐free archaeological societies. This in turn ought to facilitate the use of archaeological data for testing more general theories of cultural evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
