Abstract

The article discusses an analysis on the multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Altona and Johannesburg infections linked to live poultry in the U.S. from February to October 2011. The study found that most patients bought chicks or ducklings from multiple branches of an agricultural feed store which was supplied by a single mail-order (MO) hatchery. The authors urged MO hatcheries to comply with management and sanitation rules of the Department of Agriculture-National Poultry Improvement Plan.
