Verrucous Carcinoma: A Review of the Literature with Emphasis on Treatment Options.

Ackerman's tumor or verrucous carcinoma (VC) is a unique clinico-pathological variant of squamous cell carcinoma, occurring mainly in the oral cavity and larynx; buccal mucosa being the most commonly involved site. Since VC was first reported by Ackerman, there has been ongoing discussion regarding the preferred treatment. There is a considerable controversy in the literature regarding anaplastic transformation of verrucous carcinoma following chemotherapy, cryosurgery, laser surgery, and even after multiple conventional operations, resulting in a more aggressive behaviour.
