Abstract

The article considers the role of English author John Dryden in promoting the modern system of publishing incorporating relationships between authors, publishers, and readers. It argues that he was politically savvy in his outlook towards writing--he wrote an elegy upon the death of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell followed by a poem celebrating the Restoration of Charles II to the throne of Great Britain. Since Charles II favored theater over poetry, Dryden wrote plays. Other topics include patronage, the position of Poet Laureate, and book publisher Jacob Tonson's popular release of "Miscellany" written and edited by Dryden.
