Abstract

This article introduces and prints five documents drafted by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Headquarters of the State Police in 1939. The materials deal with various aspects of Jewish "tourist emigration" from Poland to Palestine. The documents were selected by the author specifically because 1939 was the year when Polish authorities became most concerned with the various forms of illegal ("Aliyah Bet") immigration utilized by Polish Jews in order to get to Palestine. The texts are reprinted completely with only typographical and grammatical errors corrected. The author also notes that the identifier "Jews" was strictly a religious identification in the Second Republic in Poland, and not one used to distinguish nationality/ethnicity.
