The article discusses Michael Stewart and his nonprofit start-up firm Sustainable Surf. Stewart hopes to dissuade surfers from using surfboards made of polyurethane and toxic polyester resin by by establishing a recognized standard for environmentally-friendly boards. To that end, he and his business partner, Kevin Whilden, are entering into arrangements with surfing companies that sponsor top surfers and competitions. Sustainable Surf has been engaged by the Association of Surfing Professionals to create environmental guidelines for professional surfing events in North America.
