Abstract

This section offers news briefs on archaeology in Africa. A coating of bright red powder on the insides of a pair of a 100,000-year-old abalone shells found in Blombos Cave proves the oldest known art workshop. A series of five papers based on evidence pertaining to various aspects of the anatomy of the species Australopithecus sediba announced in April 2010 were published on September 9, 2011. Researchers are using the complete genome sequences of people alive today to study human history.
