Abstract

The article looks at the life and career of 2012 U.S. presidential candidate Rick Santorum. It is noted that although Santorum did not run on social issues in his early 1990s campaigns for the U.S. House and Senate in Pennsylvania, he focused on concerns favored by the religious right such as abortion, intelligent design, and gay marriage in later elections and in his 2012 presidential campaign. Other topics discussed are the influence of his wife Karen on his views on abortion, his support for the policies of U.S. President George W. Bush, and his defeat in the 2006 Senatorial election amid charges that he actually lived in Virginia instead of Pennsylvania.
