Abstract

Metamorphosing stages of 3 species of Murænids collected from the Chandipore, Burhabulong estuary (Orissa), are dealt with in this paper. The first species is provisionally determined as Muræna (Gymnothorax) tile (Hamilton) and a connected series of the above from a toothed leptocephalus of 62·5 mm. to an early elver of 53 mm. are described. In the absence of elver stages of the other 2 species their specific identification has not been possible, but from the fairly close similarity in characters they appear to be allied to the above species. The typical leptocephalus stages amongst them are described and figured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
