Abstract

The article looks at the experiences of Hispanic immigrants in the U.S. low-wage labor market, with an emphasis on immigrants in Durham, North Carolina. Particular focus is given to employment conditions common among immigrant populations such as subcontracting and informal employment. Details on wages, employment stability, fringe benefits, and documentation are also presented. According to the author, human capital assets such as education and English language ability predicted immigrants' wages but did not affect employment stability or benefit provision. It is suggested that nonstandard work arrangements significantly impacted immigrants' economic well-being. Immigrants' participation in the food service industry and the construction industry are also discussed.
