The paper deals with the application of the Rutishauser's QD-algorithm to the evaluation of special functions in automatic computing, through the transformation of the partial sum of a power series into a convergent of the corresponding continued fraction. Results of numerical experiments are given and discussed both for elementary functions (which lend themselves to a fairly unifed treatment) and for various higher functions, for some of which a continued fraction expansion is not previously known.
