Abstract

The results described in this paper confirm that excision of the aganglionic segment is the rational treatment of Hirschsprung's disease. Although the operation may have formidable complications, it is justified; if left untreated the majority of these children die. It is emphasised that early diagnosis is possible, since twelve of the fourteen cases in this series were diagnosed in the first year and five were suspected in the first week. Abnormal bowel habit, in association with a history of delay in passing meconium, should suggest the possibility of Hirschsprung's disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
