In this paper a local method for fitting a surface from scattered data is presented. It is based on two new types of shape functions: the first one is obtained from a local application of weighted average type method, the second one is obtained through L-splines approximation. Theoretical and numerical aspects of this two types of shape functions are analyzed and numerical performances are evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
