In this paper we obtain a new asymptotic formula for the ultraspherical polynomial P (x), as n→∞, with an error term which is O (n ) uniformly in the interval −1+δ≤ x≤1−δ,δ>0. Very accurate approximations for the zeros of P (x) are also derived from the preceding formula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
