Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) grid coordination polymers were prepared by the reaction of 1,4-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)tetrafluorobenzene (bpf) with Cu(NO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript> in the presence of aromatic compounds. Crystal structures of {[Cu(bpf)<subscript>2</subscript>(NO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>]·(biphenyl)<subscript>2</subscript>}<subscript>n</subscript> (1), {[Cu(bpf)<subscript>2</subscript>(NO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>]·(m-C<subscript>6</subscript>H<subscript>4</subscript>(OMe)<subscript>2</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>}n (2), {[Cu(bpf)<subscript>2</subscript>(NO<subscript>3</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>]·Ph<superscript>t</superscript>Bu}<subscript>n</subscript> (3) and {[Cu(bpf)<subscript>2</subscript>(NO<subscript>3</subscript>)(H<subscript>2</subscript>O)]NO<subscript>3</subscript>·(bpf)<subscript>0.5</subscript>}<subscript>n</subscript> (4) were determined. The grid networks were held together by C-H⋯O and C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds via the NO<subscript>3</subscript><superscript>-</superscript> anions and the tetrafluorophenylene rings of bpf, respectively. Biphenyl, m-dimethoxybenzene, t-butylbenzene, and bpf molecules were clathrated in cyclic cavities of the grid networks through arene-perfluoroarene interactions. These coordination networks have remarkable clathration ability for aromatic compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
