Abstract

The article offers information on "The Bathers," an acrylic painting by Georges Desarmes featured in this issue of the journal. It notes that this painting highlights life on the Artibonite River, as well as nearby communities prior to the cholera outbreak in Haiti. Desarmes, born Yves Michaud and Port-au-Prince, started painting impressions of Haitian life in 2000. It characterizes the painting's scene as lyrical, spare, sunny and pre-cholera. It points out that cholera does not recognize false boundaries and highlights the frailties of political conflict, as well as the aftermath of mass travel and a rise in human contact.
