Abstract

The authors reflect on the development of tissue-engineered small intestine (TESI) for treatment of the Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) in humans. They discuss various strategies for identification and propagation of intestinal stem cells and their biomarkers including culturing of fibroblasts and pluripotent stem cells. Information on TESI and its applicability to stomach, esophagus and large intestine, is also provided.
